Liquid damage on M4 Pro and it seems an IC chip needs to be replaced

Hi all, I would like some hints on what could be done next. The battery was already low, so when I had a spill, immediately tried to dry it off, managed to "save the laptop" (when we turned it on, seems to be intact but as soon as we tried to charge it it would either reboot or just wouldn't power) — however as soon as we dried it for about 3-4 days, and tried to plug the MagSafe, it won't charge.

Took it to the third party repair and they mentioned there was a short, most likely located in the logicboard. When we checked the voltage, there is 5v on the USB-C ports, meaning it should still be fine....?

There's no schematics released yet. My only assumption is that the IC chip has to be replaced, but their concern is getting the right IC chip.

I'm no technician and the third party has way more expereience in electronics and micro soldering component parts. But I am losing my marbles since I just got this thing. Currently still under progress (been about a day ish).

There are a few different models for the 14" M4

A3112 10 CPU/10 GPU 14" (820-03129)

A3401 12 CPU/16 GPU 14" (820-03400)

A3401 14 CPU/20 GPU 14" (820-03400)

A3185 14 CPU/32 GPU 14"

A3403 14 CPU/20 GPU 16"

Which model do you have?

I also cannot find any schematics for any of these models as yet....

@crowbell The board number for this one is (820-03400) it might help in a search for the schematics.

@livfe hasn't been around as of now. i'm just thinking if this is not fixable by third party, I might as well try submit it to the official services

@crowbell Never give up, pity the schematics isn't available as yet so someone can have a deep inspection before submitting it to the costly apple services.... good luck!

Ouch! You have a 2024 - MacBook Pro "M4 Pro" system (A3401) there are two versions!

Sadly it's going to be awhile before schematics and board views find there way out of Apple or one of the reverse engineering houses create them. Even still with these at hand many of Apples chips are custom! Either their own silicon or programmed so off the shelf chips won't work.

While still expensive your best bet is seeing if the board you need is available via Apple with their new Self Service Repair option. Reference the now supplied MacBook Pro (14-inch, M4 Pro or M4 Max, 2024) Repair Manual and digging to the parts page here Exploded View and Orderable Parts review the part #23 which are the logic boards.

See if you can order it and the cost and also try getting to a real Apple Store to get a price on replacing the logic board. Don't tell them you got the system wet.

Other than the liquid markers might have turned is the rest of the system clean and doesn't show any visible damage (externally or internally)? Then just play dumb! Let them discover what is the problem. You might get lucky!

Got an update here and annoyingly I have to change the whole logicboard.. I really want to see if there's any possibility to do a microsolder repair, but as you mentioned those chips are custom so I'm just kind of at a loss really. The IC chip is what's causing the issue but no spare parts are on the market as of now...

The markers are red so there's that as well...

@crowbell - Yep, not much hope on the customs unless Apple offers them.

I still have my trusty Bomar Brain four function calculator my dad got me when I went off to college. It was one of the first small handheld calculators about the size of an iPhone. I loved the tiny Amber LED digits it sits in the same drawer as my now dead LCD displayed Panasonic programmable. Unlike it, it still works!

I've seen that M1 chips can get microsoldering fixes. Are they custom programmed as well? For context, the charging IC chip is what had a short. I had no idea that this type of IC chip would need any bespoke work done!

What are your thoughts on keeping the Macbook for another couple of years... at that point maybe the %#*@ M10 is out but I spent cash on this thing so I am not going willing to give up on it :((

@crowbell - If you look at the Identification de la puce M3 Pro du MacBook Pro 14" fin 2023 which is very similar to this M4 model you can see all of the major chips ID'd and if you go to your M1 system you'll also find in a similar Teardown listing the chips as well. Yes some are custom or programmed so you need to use a recovered chip and some that's not possible.

So in 10 years it might be hard to find a few of them new, I'm sure you can find a parts board to recover the required components and chip/s that should keep you going another 5 years or even more. But batteries are the more limiting issue as the chemistry does breakdown over time as well as the display and keyboard break or just wear-out.

So don't fret to much! Just because it's older doesn't mean useless! I still have a 2013 MacPro and many people have even older ones still working hard. Remember Apple and most companies need to convince you the need to upgrade or buy new otherwise they can't get the cash flow.

They are either red or blue light visible dots which are placed around the system where liquid would likely enter and sensitive areas.
