I have a similar (possibly same) issue using that drive in a drive carrier in an Intel Xserve. It doesn't at all show up in Disk Utility. The drive has a jumper header, but I have not found any documentation indicating, whether or not and how it might be possible to force a lower SATA transfer speed.
