Difficult to reconnect camera cable to motherboard

New optical drive (replacement bought from Ifixit) is installed and I am reassembling. There is a piece of plastic glued to the motherboard between the camera cable connector and the optical drive cable. It obstructs attempts to properly line up the connector on the camera cable connector with the jack on the board. I cannot brute-force this because the instructions say this part is fragile and easily bent. How I am supposed to accomplish this? Thanks!

In response to your request to clarify the model Mac: A1278 is printed on the aluminum case. It was bought August 2009 and it fits the specs on apple.com for the 13" MacBook Pro except it has 2.53 GHZ processor and 4MB Ram instead of 2. Apple's site says it has core 2 duo. Did I misspeak with "core duo?" Maybe that's the problem. Your tech helped me choose the right drive to buy (163-005-1) which apparently has a different connector than those for earlier macs. The drive's in and fits. I think it failed because I dropped it.

Please clarify which computer you have- there only recently is a 13" MacBook Pro, and core duo was phased out a while ago, so you either have a 13" MacBook Core Duo, or some other size MacBook Pro

From the model number I was able to determine it was a unibody, I'm assuming you still mean MacBook Pro

Is it possible to replace this cable? I think mine bent as well, but it was just one tiny little one on the end, bent it back...haven't tried it yet...but scared now.

I was paranoid about bending it because it looked like it would require replacing some expensive part if not the whole mac if I did. But I don't really remember exactly what I saw now and can't say what your options are for fixing the problem. I do not have any experience fixing recent Macs...only did support in the 1990's and have done some PC hardware support.

I went to Best Buy--they couldn't do it, and then to the Apple store which told me same thing you now know....if we invade the machine, Apple will never touch it again. But the tech did inform me that the piece of plastic that was blocking my access is really just there to keep the cable from falling out and it would be ok to just pry it off the board. I did that and connected the cable just fine. Condolences on bending yours. That's a big bummer since, as you say, the Airport doesn't work without it. Now I wonder what else will die early because I dropped the Mac. Expensive lesson. Sigh. Thanks for asking! Wish I had a solution for you!

I actually got mine back, found massaging it with a soft toothbrush finally made it work. They should put blinking lights around that part of the take-apart. So when you do this, pull to the LEFT, not UP, and you should be okay.

Today before work I decided to give it another shot. I had 4 of the prongs that were bent. I was careful and just would try to bend them slightly back, viewing it from a different angle each time. Well guess what...I now have bluetooth again! Now it just says "no airport card installed." Baby steps...

Not all liquid spills end badly :)

Way to go! Hope you get airport back too.
