By back plate I assume you mean the laptop's base cover assembly and not the lid cover, is this correct?
If it is then the easiest way to find out where to locate the magnet is to slowly run a magnet around the bezel of the screen assembly and check when the screen turns off.
Once the screen turns off, the location of the magnet will be in the base cover position opposite to where the magnet is being held by you on the edger of the screen bezel, when the lid is in the closed position
If you meant the lid cover, run the magnet around the edge of the keyboard/top cover assembly and note the position of the magnet when the screen turns off. The magnet position will be in the screen cover opposite to where you're holding the magnet on the keyboard /top cover, when the lid is in the closed position .

@harrisontafft besides the aforementioned great steps to find the location, use the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen2 P14s Gen2 Hardware Maintenance Manual and search for Hall sensor. It will show you the location of the sensor (It is near near the top of the display, in the lid). The magnet will be exactly opposite of the sensor.
