3DS XL does not boot with SD card. (Has CFW)

Just got a New 3DS LL today and noticed it already had Luma installed, but no SD card. 3DS boots up fine and plays games fine. Upon inserting an SD card, the system will black screen, with the blue power light remaining on. I’ve tried multiple sd cards, loading Luma on to sd cards, cleaning the sd cards and the sd card slot. Nothing works. Is there something I’m missing? Is the sd card slot cooked and beading to be replaced? I did open it up and check out the slot and it seemed fine, tho there was a screw missing meaning someone has been in there before.

Yep, probably a borked SD reader. Just a quick check before you go buying parts though: Are you able to boot to GodMode9? And if so, does it recognize the SD card?

(Of course, make sure GodMode9.firm exists in luma/payloads/ for this test)

I was able to boot into GodMode9 if I booted without sd card. If I placed sd card in while godmode9 was open the system crashed

Yep, probably a borked SD reader. Just a quick check before you go buying parts though: Are you able to boot to GodMode9? And if so, does it recognize the SD card?

Definitely a borked SD reader then. Lucky for you, it's not too difficult to replace. You can find the guide for it right here.

Unfortunately, iFixit doesn't sell the part, but a quick Google search and you should find one pretty easily.

Just got the new SD card slot in and it’s still going to a black screen. Any more ideas 😭

Hi!

Okay, so whenever you put in a SD card, the issue is always the same? Black screen with the blue light burning? Everything works completely fine without the SD card, right?

Basically caused by the SD card reader, but since you already replaced this, it must be something else.

Is the 3DS completely up to date? You also formatted the 3DS completely? Just to be sure.

How big is the SD card btw? I would try a 8GB or less card just to test. Be sure it’s FAT32 formatted. How many SD card have you tested?

It could be something on the motherboard. Is this all looking good?
