I accidentally loosened the bottom speed control screw, and it came out. I have the screw, a nut and a bracket that the screw seems to fit into, but if I reattach it, the mixer stays in high speed.
My mixer is pre-solid state.

Mr. Mixer in Benton, Kansas, was able to help me out. There is a spring that attaches to the bottom of the governor assembly, and it had come loose. The other end of the spring was attached further in the mixer, and there is a guide hole that the spring passes through on its way to the governor that caught the end of the spring as it retracted. Since the spring wasn’t hanging loose, I didn’t think it was what I needed. I had to take the top off the mixer to get to it, but as I’ve regressed it previously, I was familiar. I was able to get it reattached, and everything works correctly again.

@oldschoolmixer take a look at the KitchenAid K45SS K5XX service manual. It shows how to work on the governor assembly on the rear of the control plate. In case your mixer shows something different, post some pictures of what yours looks like. That way we can see what you see and hopefully can help you further. Ajout d'images à une question existante
@oldschoolmixer check this video at around 2:47 min to see how the speed controller works and how to check it. Also, which bottom screw are you referring to?
"The mixer stays in high speed" is a capacitor error. Replace the 0.1µF capacitor which is the one wrapped in the "brown card board" visible on top of your speed controller board.

That guide is for a newer mixer than mine.

I don’t know how to reassemble, and all the diagrams I’ve found are not helpful.
