Why does it acknowledge old cartridges but not play them?
GBA sp acknowledges original Gameboy games but doesn't play the game.loads and plays GBA games flawlessly. Disassembled the cartridge switch noticed the contacts were dirty so I cleaned them well all the contacts were shiny so I put it all back together and still no change I'm at a complete loss. Why does it acknowledge the cartridge but not play it?

So.. how many Gameboy/Gameboy Color games did you test? It’s possible that the game is just faulty.. thanks!

I've eliminated that possibility because the older gameboy carts work perfectly in my Gameboy color.

Actually, I might not eliminate that possibility just yet. Sometimes, when Nintendo has incorporated backwards compatibility into a console, a game will play on the older console, but not the new one (Case in point: the GameCube will sometimes read GameCube discs that the Wii won't. I have no clue why this is, so if anyone has any ideas, I'd really like to know for the sake of curiosity.). I wouldn't rule out the possibility that this is what is happening here. So before you're completely sure that it's not just your GBA SP being picky, I'd test the older cartridges in a different GBA (Preferably another SP), if possible. Then you'd know for certain if it's the console or the cartridge. Or as @dan0 says, you could try a different GBC cartridge. Either way, it would eliminate pickiness of condition as the culprit.
