My gameboy advance sp charger light turns on when it is not plugged into the charger but turns off when plugged into charger. I am not sure if it is charging my battery or not. Also I do not feel like leaving the battery in my handheld since the light might drain battery.

First of all, replace the battery and see what happens. Could be battery or motherboard related.
Replacing the battery is the first step To do!

I tried with a different battery but the issue still persists
Okay. Thanks! Then in this case it’s motherboard related I’m afraid. Could you check the fuses just in case? Did you do any repair there?
