MacBook Pro M2 Display glitch is this hardware or software related?

Less than 250ms of a frame

On macOS 26.2-26.3 and 26.3.1 (Apple Silicon M2 Pro), I am experiencing a very brief (1-frame) UI compositing glitch on the internal display. The issue occurs within a very brief time window (less than 250 ms), but it is extremely disruptive and visually distracting.

- Not thermal or load-related (tested under sustained high load)

- Installing third-party display scaling tools (e.g., BetterDisplay) reduces the frequency but does not eliminate the issue. (BetterDisplay installed on 26.3 but issue was also consistent at 26.2)

- A clean installation performed according to Apple’s official guidelines did not resolve the issue.

Behavior:

- The glitch appears as a brief (single-frame) layer misalignment or compositing artifact.

- It occurs even during light usage such as web browsing.

- It is particularly noticeable and disruptive while using code editors (UI instability is visually distracting).

Frequency:

- The issue repeats continuously.

- Sometimes it happens very frequently.

- Other times it occurs randomly every few minutes or every few hours.

- The behavior appears non-deterministic but persistent over time.

This is a bit tricky! As I can see both a hardware or OS issue behind it. You'll need to try to break the issue down to figure what's needed.

  • Does the issue show up within an external display when the internal gets distorted?
  • As you are running under heavy load what is the systems thermals? Both the M1 and M2 had issues of heat bleed into the T-CON logic board (which is part of the display assembly) I would install a good thermal monitoring App like TG-Pro to reduce the heat load of the system. Does the issue go away when the system temp is lower?

You are also doing coding which often requires lots of RAM space. What can happen here is the systems RAM and its Flash storage become out stretched running to much given what your given system config can offer. So, a baseline system can't sustain the work load that a larger RAM/Flash system offers and even that might be pressed if you don't have enough free unused space within the Flash storage as the system is designed to leverage what it has for unused space to extend it RAM via Virtual RAM and then the given running Apps have paging areas and scratch space allocations to compete with VRAM needs!

Bottom line you maybe over stressing your system running too much at the same time! To many open browser windows even if just a Tab as each one holds its RAM space no matter where it is. Compiling code in background or watching a YouTube Vid or two concurrently also uses space! Clean your drive space down to the bare minimum, get and use an external drive to store your created code, music or vids which can be large.

Hey thanks for the answer, I have 16gb of ram and more than 400 GB of free storage available. The issue repeats even when the RAM is fully loaded or barely used, and it also continues after restarting the system, even just browsing.

The problem occurs regardless of whether the display is set to 60Hz or ProMotion.

For thermal testing, I monitored the system while running an AI model in LM Studio to create heavy load. Even when the temperature approaches 100°C and the fans ramp up, there is no increase or decrease in the issue. It behaves the same as when the system is under no load, appearing randomly at unknown intervals.

When I run Apple Diagnostics, there are no dead pixels or display issues detected, and the color accuracy is normal. All diagnostic tests pass successfully.

@rrogin - Let's run Disk Utility an First Aid to see if it finds any issues within the storage. Make sure you restart the system with nothing preloaded or run the system from a bootable external drive (the better) so the full flash space can be tested.

How big is your code you are viewing? Does smaller code sets work better than the larger? You may need more RAM/Flash space (real Addressable space) not virtual space.

Remember Apple uses a unitized RAM memory space, shared between the CPU and GPU logic so while I'm aiming you at the Flash as it tends to wear-out and need to be written out of use so a provisional group of Cells can be used (running First Aid) it might be you don't have anything left to replace and wear-leveling is also out of space. This can happen when the files are not able to be moved (why using a external drive can make a difference)

Hy there, I’m going to start First Aid, but just to clarify: this issue happens even when browsing the internet with only 1–2 tabs open. It also occurs with a completely idle background, with nothing loaded. The usage doesn’t increase or decrease regardless of the load. Also, it’s very random—sometimes it happens frequently, every few minutes, and other times hours pass without any issues; the intervals are completely unpredictable.

@rrogin - if the system is glitching just sitting is this also visible with an external display or just the internal?

That's an important data point! As if only the internal shows the Glitch while the external doesn't that's a bad internal display assembly, within the displays T-CON board!

First of all, thank you for your attention. It does not happen on an external display, it only occurs on the internal display. It also continues to happen even when the refresh rate is set to 60 Hz. As seen in the video, there is no color loss and the image does not freeze. The issue appears and disappears in less than 200 ms.
