MacBook Pro M4 forcing sleep mode due to false thermal sensor

Hi everyone,

I’m facing a frustrating issue with my MacBook Pro M4 (purchased Feb 2025, AppleCare expired) and wanted to see if anyone has encountered this or found a workaround.

Whenever I open the lid—especially after it has been idle—the system behaves as if it’s under extreme thermal stress. It forces itself into sleep mode repeatedly (around 3 to 7 times in a row) before finally stabilizing and going back to normal.

There is no actual overheating, no high CPU usage, and no excessive fan noise.

After digging into the diagnostics, I managed to isolate the root cause. A specific thermal sensor, TDv (appearing as TD23 in the SMC logs), is stuck giving a false, static reading of 81 degree celsius. This erroneous spike is clearly causing the system to panic and force immediate sleep states to protect the hardware.

A factory reset did not change anything, as the issue is driven by this faulty sensor reading. I've attached my powermetrics logs and the diagnostic dump below.

Has anyone dealt with a single rogue sensor failing like this on an Apple Silicon Mac? Is there any known software method or tool to ignore/override a specific sensor input before I resort to a hardware repair?

Any insight would be highly appreciated.

The "TDv sensor" usually refers to the Lid Angle Sensor (LAS) or sleep/wake sensor in MacBook Pros. This flex cable measures the exact angle of the screen to the uppercase.

Did you have a liquid spill near the backside of the system? I'm suspecting either the sensor cable is damaged (sensor) or the connection to the logic board. Hi @danj, the issue isn't the lid angle sensor, that works fine (screen sleeps/wakes normally on lid open/close).

The real trigger happens right after waking from shutdown/sleep. A thermal sensor (TD23) reading rapidly spikes to ~81°C, forcing the Mac into a repetitive sleep loop 4–5 times. After that, the system seems to ignore the reading and works as expected.

Sometimes, the sensor intermittently drops back down to a normal 30–40°C whenever that happens, the symptom disappears entirely until the next shutdown.

@mayankragh80491 - I understand your logic, but you need to follow the Troubleshooting process I linked to (Blue URL above) I encountered this as well it was corrosion on the logic board where the cable connects. I also needed to replace the cable as it was damaged as well.

@danj I already did the troubleshooting which is recommended by you. but no help :(

I can just say one thing is that the issue is due to lid only, because when I keep the lid close and use an external monitor the issue doesn't occur.

@mayankragh80491 - Yep! The lid is the key!! So what tells the logic board the state of the Lid? It's that pesky lid sensor... so somewhere between the sensor and how it is analyzed by the logic within the logic board is where the failure is.

To clarify... it's not the sense it's the logic within the sensor and/or the power to the sensor chip on the cable.
