The iPod Seventh Generation, marketed and sold as the "iPod Classic", was released in September 2009, and did not have any visible differences compared to the previous version. It simply replaced the previous 120GB iPod Classic 6.5 with a thin 160GB version.

Firmware preventing my iPod from using itunes on a mac

Fixed the hard drive on my IPod Classic gen 7 and now I cannot open it with Itunes on my mac powerbook computer.

The message says..

"The ipod could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible".

I tried restarting the computer and changing out cables but it still won't work.

Is there any other way to fix this or get my songs loaded onto my ipod for free?

Thanks

From EveryMac:

All 120 GB models support Mac OS X 10.4.11. For the 160 GB configuration Apple introduced on September 9, 2009, the company increased the iTunes software requirement up to version 9, but maintained compatibility with Mac OS X 10.4.11. However, Apple quietly increased the system requirements of late 160 GB configurations to Mac OS X 10.6.8 or higher in October 2012.

Make sure you iTunes is of this time frame as Apple has been known to drop files in newer releases. I would start there.
