Stripped screws in the bottom shell

I bought a second-handed 3DS along with a couple of physical games for only $50, and I was very happy about this buy until I found out the screws in the bottom shell were all stripped.

The console turns on and before the home menu pops up, it suddenly turns off with a "pop". It is likely a broken ribbon cable, which should be a relatively easy fix, but I can't even open the console because of the screws. I tried using hot glue, a small rubber band and none of that seem to work.

I truly don't know how to proceed. I don't wanna end up damaging the motherboard or any other component.

Hi!

The hot glue should sometimes do the trick. You can also try to use the Ifixit screw extractor.

@oldturkey03 do you have any tips?

Regarding the “pop” sound issue, is usually related to the speaker ribbon cable. Replace that whole assembly with the cable for a new one. This should fix that!

@dan0 @evan40021 I honestly have never had to much luck with the hot glue etc. This is one of those cases where I would use a dremel and a drill bit just a bit bigger than half the size of the screw. Then drill into the center until the screw head comes off. The I remove the rest of the screw with a pair of pliers when the case is completely opened. Depending on how tight this all is, you might even get away with one of the many grinding attachments you can get for the dremel like tools. Remember , the task to accomplish is simply to remove the screw head.
