On the dashboard meter screen when the car is engaged into drive the (D) light after sometime starts blinking at that moment the gear selection starts to malfunction

A blinking D light is your transmission's version of a Check Engine light. It indicates that the Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected a fault in the transmission's operation and is trying to tell you something's wrong.
You will have to get the car scanned through the OBD-II port, but be aware that standard scanners can only access the engine computer; it requires a specialized scanner to read the transmission codes. A dealer or a transmission shop will be able to pull the codes, but it's possible a regular mechanic may have the right equipment.
Whatever you do, do NOT ignore it; it could be warning you of a catastrophic problem that can end up costing you thousands if you don't address it.
