Why is my iMac Intel 27" startup drive missing?

My 2012 iMac fusion drive stopped loading. In recovery, I can verify the disk but not repair. I can see both drives but can not erase or reformat. Both drive names appear in red. When I attempt to reinstall Catalina I get the message "This disk doesn't use the GUID Partition Table Scheme." It's like the drive disappeared. Has anyone seen this before I may know what my options are? Thank you in advance.

Sadly it sounds like the Fusion Drive set has a corruption. You'll need to boot up under an external bootable drive to try to repair it.

You'll need a second Mac to create the bootable drive, all you'll need a 32GB USB Thumb drive which you first want to reformat it the GUID with a journaled file system with the same OS you are using.

I did reformat a USB drive and loaded it with the installer. Still didn't help because the installer couldn't see the iMac drive. I also tried to create a runable Catalina OS on the flash drive but, believe it or not, my 2015 MacBook is too new to do the install. If I can just find a way to install the OS on the flash drive, I'd have another chance. Thanks for the advice, DanJ.

@lou98476 - Catalina should work! It sounds like you didn't access the Startup manager command Option (⌥) or Alt

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

If that fails you may need to delete the Fusion drives partition and reformat the drive. Keep in mind that will destroy what ever you have on the drive.
