Error f8 e4 and initial drain doesn’t run

My whirlpool dishwasher was giving the f8e4 error. I took the bottom panel off and the tray with the float switch was totally dry. That seems to be the typical issue so I’m trying to figure out what else it might be. I found that if I leave the dishwasher to sit for a while, then run the cancel/drain button, and then immediately try to run the cleaning cycle, it will often work. If this doesn’t make it work, I usually need to let it sit for an hour or more before trying again. I’ve also sometimes put water into the bottom so it has something to drain out.

I did recently change from pods to loose powder, but after reading that I was possibly putting in too much powder I’ve gone back to pods. I thought I’d found the problem but after one successful cycle, it’s gone back to not starting without the error and my ridiculous attempts to make it run.

I’ve also checked the filter at the bottom, felt around and below the filter for any possible debris.

Any advice?

Well. Replaced the float switch and the issues still continue. It seems to drain fine as long as there is water in the bottom. It’s like it just won’t always kick off the wash cycle. I’m wondering if this could be a control board issue. Any thoughts?

Check if the wiring between the float switch and the control board is OK i.e. good connections, no corrosion or fractured wire in harness cable.

Here's a tech sheet for one of the models i.e. wdt750sakz0 that will help.

The float switch connects to P11 pins 6-7 on the control board. Looking at the tech sheets for other model variants i.e. wdt750sakz1 → 4 it is the same.

The schematic shows that the switch is normally closed and that there's 12V from the control board to the switch.

The Whirlpool dishwasher F8E4 error code means water has pooled in the bottom base pan or drip tray, lifting a foam float switch. This safety mechanism trips to prevent kitchen flooding. Common causes include a loose water inlet connection, an overfilled tub, a minor leak, or excessive soap suds.

That float switch may be stuck, requiring you to wait till it eventually falls back. Where it is and how to clean it is another story.

Is this the case even if the tray around the float switch is totally dry when checked? You think it’s just malfunctioning?

I opened up the bottom gain yesterday to check the float switch again. Upon verifying that it was dry and in the down position I tried to run the cycle and it ran fine. I’ve gone ahead and ordered a replacement float switch on the assumption that this one is faulty. (I know I can check it with my multimeter but I couldn’t easily unclip it and read online of some people breaking it when attempting to release it.) Once I have the replacement in hand I’ll take the existing one out and will double check for continuity but I’m thinking I’ll just replace it no matter what. I left the bottom open and this morning, after checking that the float switch was in the correct position, was able to run it again without issue.

The F8E4 error on a Whirlpool dishwasher is a sign that the drain pump is not working right. This usually happens when something is wrong with the motor inside the drain pump or the electrical circuit. It is of like when the drain pump gets too hot and just stops working. Then it starts working after it has been sitting idle for a while. This means the motor in the drain pump is getting too hot and that is why the drain pump is failing.

To fix this problem you need to replace the drain pump. The thing you need to replace is called the Dishwasher Drain Pump. The part number, for the Dishwasher Drain Pump is W10348269.
