Is the new battery an Apple branded battery or is it a third party battery? The battery thermal diode test gets its reading from the battery itself. Third party batteries will almost always fail this test as they either don't have the proper firmware or sensor in place to return a reading. The booting issue you describe is also a common issue with third party batteries. I've refurbished upwards of 500 MacBooks and for a long time my employer insisted on using their own third party batteries when we'd run across a failed/consumed Apple battery. A good number of them would behave normally (aside from the battery thermal diode test) but there were still lots that would show the exact symptom you describe, only running off the battery after it was booted with the charger attached. Hope that helps!
