Alarm or battery problem?

Texte:

I have a 97 Mazda 323 with an alarm system (no idea if it's factory or aftermarket). I do know it's wired into the trunk lock and the lights.

This morning I went out and my rear red lights were on and nothing else. When I pressed the unlock button on my remote it set off the alarm (it sounded strange though like the battery was mostly drained). The only way I could stop it was to disconnect the negative battery terminal. The remote was ineffective. Reconnecting started the alarm again. I disconnected the positive terminal then reconnected both arms the alarm stopped. Unfortunately the car wouldn't start and using the remote activated the alarm once more then the battery died.

Does this sound like an alarm or a battery issue or something else?
