Could installing a defective screen and powering up the phone cause this?

A replacement screen would not light up at all... defective. The replacement for the replacement works fine but for the darkness in the upper right of the screen. Identical to the OP's picture. I'm pretty darn carful about disconnecting battery be for pulling a screen, so I don't think that was the cause.
