When your engine is running the battery voltage should sit around 14 volts if your alternator is working correctly. When the engine is not running your battery voltage will drop back down to roughly 12.6 volts. What you described sounds like normal operation unless your voltage is ever out of that 12-14V range. Hope this put your mind at ease!
