Sounds like you may have got some water inside the phone.  You could try placing the phone in a ziplock bag with a pile of desiccant overnight to see if that works to remove the issue.  With it getting hot now, there may have been corrosion that is shorting out the battery, (water getting into the battery is extremely unlikely), and may need some further service by someone that can open it up and investigate.
