I contacted leappad and got this answer:
The bypass code 196 (backspace) 87 is no longer working for LeapPad tablets. To resolve the issue, you will need to reset the device to factory settings with the following steps.[br]
* Starting with the tablet powered off.
* Please press and hold the power button and the higher volume button together until you see a LeapFrog System Recovery Screen.
* Using the volume buttons, please choose the wipe data/factory reset and press the power button to continue.
Once done with the reset, please register the device with your own LeapFrog parent account and create your new parent lock code.
Note: Resetting the unit will delete all the saved data.
Furthermore, once you have created your new parent lock code when setting up the unit again, you can reset the 4-digit code anytime by accessing the Parent Settings screen of the tablet. Once in the Parent Settings screen, you can reset the code by tapping "Device", then Parent Lock Code.
