Ram is pretty inexpensive. I would visit crucial.com and select your model from their easy drop-down lists. The site will tell you the maximum amount of ram the system supports. On the mini, as mayer states, some will support 4GB.
-If your model supports 2GB or 4GB, I would definitely just max it out and be done with it vs having to tear down the mini later.

I still have several 512GB chips that I've pulled from various mac mini's and Apple Laptops that I keep around. They aren't worth anything, so I just throw them in older Windows laptops for customers at no charge on many occasions.
