Mon problème
Seems like the Nexus 7 power button has a reputation of wearing out after normal use. I wasn't able to turn my Nexus 7 off and on using the power button.
Ma solution
The repair was rather easy. Pry open the back cover, remove the battery, find the power/volume strip, remove it and attach the new one using adhesive (I used a drop of krazy glue).
Mon conseil
Not much advice needed. If lost, plenty of videos on YouTube that can guide you. It's been my experience that some Nexus 7 backcovers are easier to remove than others.
