The iPod would forget itself in the cold -classic battery symptom.

Ma solution

Overall, the repair went really well. The instructions and the replacement battery were spot on. One small detail was missed in the repair guide...Six tiny screws hold the faceplate to the bulk of the insides. Maybe I missed this detail in the instructions. It would change the "pry open the device" step a little and would require even more care. As it happened, I had some very minor plastic breakage that does not seem to have affected how well it snapped back together.
