This guide will show you how to replace a 2009 Honda Fit brake light. Depending on what year the model is, these steps may vary. Driving with a broken brake light can be a safety hazard to you and others on the road. You also risk getting pulled over and ticketed. This guide shows the steps to remove the old burned out bulb and replace it with a brand new one.

Note: If you have big hands, you might have a difficult time with this replacement due to the small compartment you are working with.
If one brake light bulb burns out, chances are the other one will burn out soon. It is best to change both bulbs at the same time to avoid extra repair sessions.

Before you begin the repair, turn off your car, and put it in park.

Open your trunk to access the brake light panel.

Use a trim removal tool or your key to pry the panel and gain access to the brake light.

Rotate the brake light socket clockwise until it unlocks.
Pull out the brake light socket.
Make sure you are replacing the bottom bulb(brake light) and not the top bulb(tail light).

Pull out the old bulb from brake light socket and insert new bulb.
The old bulb can be identified with its dark burnt look.
Wear a nitrile glove or something similar to avoid getting oils from your fingers on the glass bulb. The oils and salt on your hands can reduce the life of the bulb and cause it to burn out more quickly.

Insert brake light socket with the new bulb into the housing compartment.
Similar to the removal, you have to rotate the socket into a locked position.

After reassembly, have someone test the brake light so you can see if it works or not.
If no one is available to help, reverse towards a wall and park. Press on the brake and look at your side mirrors to check if they light up.
