Cleaning a Browning BPS Shotgun

    • Before you begin, make sure that the gun is unloaded.

    • Always be aware of where the muzzle is pointed. Never point the gun at anything that you do not intend to shoot, even if the gun is unloaded.

    • Muzzle: The end of the barrel.

    • Barrel: A long metal tube on the top side of the gun. It is where the shot from the shell travels to the muzzle.

    • Ensure that the gun's safety is on. This is a slide on the top of the gun. To activate the safety, slide this backwards. The red dot should NOT be visible.

    • Safety: Prevents the trigger from being pulled; this is a slide which located on the top of the gun behind the barrel.

    • Never rest your finger on or pull the trigger when you do not intend to shoot.

    • Trigger: A curved piece of metal behind the receiver, it is what you pull with your finger when a round is loaded, the safety is off, and aiming at a target in order to fire the gun.

    • Depress the slide release and pull the fore grip toward the stock. This will release any round that is loaded into the gun.

    • Slide Release: A button found besides the trigger.

    • Push the fore grip forward until it is locked in position. This will load any rounds in the magazine into the chamber.

    • Fore grip: A wooden grip over the magazine that slides back to eject the empty shell and load another round.

    • Magazine: The metal tube under the barrel, where the extra rounds are held until they are loaded to be fired or removed.

    • Chamber: Where the shell is housed as it is ready to be fired. Located directly above the trigger in the center of the gun.

    • Repeat the above steps until all the rounds have been ejected.

    • Screw the three pieces of the ramrod together.

    • Ramrod: A long, straight metal rod that is paired with a cotton mop or wire brush to clean the inside of a barrel.

    • Connect the adapter to the end of the ramrod.

    • Connect the 12 gauge wire brush to the ramrod. Slide this all the way to the bottom of the barrel and then out two to three times. It may help to place the butt of the gun on the floor.

    • Wire Brush: A metal brush that attaches to the ramrod and is used to clean the inside of the barrel.

    • Detach the wire brush from the ramrod and attach the 12 gauge cotton mop.

    • Cotton Mop: A cotton wad that attaches to the ramrod used to wipe the inside of the barrel with cleaning oil.

    • Lightly coat the cotton mop with the Rem Oil and slide this all the way to the bottom of the barrel and out two to three times.

    • Rem Oil: A multi-purpose oil that cleans metal, protects metal, and does not attract dirt to the metal.

    • Disassemble and put away the ramrod, wire brush, and cotton mop.

    • Ensure the fore grip is in the forward position.

    • Remove the magazine cap by unscrewing it. It may click initially while being unscrewed.

    • Magazine Cap: Small round cover that screws over the end of the magazine.

    • Remove the barrel by sliding it forward.

    • Spray a spot onto the rag with the Rem Oil and wipe down the outside of the action and wipe the inside of the magazine as far as you can. You made need to reapply Rem Oil to the rag if it runs out.

    • Action: Interior mechanism of the gun.

    • Slide the fore grip back and wipe down the chamber.

    • Use the rag to wipe down the magazine originally covered by the fore grip.

    • Press the slide release and slide the fore grip forwards or backwards to ensure the magazine is all clean.

    • Press the slide release and slide the fore grip backwards.

    • Take the barrel and slide it back onto the receiver, with the ring guide over the magazine.

    • Guide Ring: A portion of the barrel that is screwed into the magazine cap to lock the barrel in place.

    • Screw the magazine cap back over the ring guide on the magazine. Tighten by hand.

    • Spray a spot onto the rag with the Rem Oil and wipe down all external metal parts of the gun.

    • Avoid touching any of the metal parts of the gun to ensure that fingerprints and oil from your skin are not left on the gun.

    • ALWAYS store your gun UNLOADED in a safe and secure manner in a warm and dry location.
