Fix nonfunctioning keys on Alesis Q-series MIDI controller keyboards

Introduction

Individual black or white keys on Alesis Q-series MIDI controller keyboards (Q25, Q49, Q61, QX25, QX49, QX61, etc.) sometimes quit functioning – you press it, and no MIDI signal so no sound. I have repaired mine several times.

    • Disconnect USB and power cables.

    • Turn the unit upside down.

    • Unfasten the 10 screws with a screwdriver. Do not try to remove the screws from the unit. Just leave them completely loose in their wells.

    • Pulling the front of the bottom toward you, verify that all screws are unfastened.

    • Put 10 pieces of masking tape, one on each screw, so no screws will be lost during the next step

    • Flip the unit back right-side up.

    • Pulling the front of the bottom toward you, remove the black top case. (You see, this is why you needed the wide table.) Be careful not to break any cables! NOTE: You are done removing screws. It is not necessary to remove any screws inside to complete this repair.

    • By pulling up with nose pliers, remove springs from bad keys, and for bad keys which are black, the adjacent white key or two.

    • To remove a white key or black key, push the front end of it down and pull toward the front. Note that there is a hook you must clear.

    • Connect keyboard to computer or sound module and verify that the bad key(s) are still not functioning, while the other keys are functioning.

    • Perform procedures on the bad keys until they function reliably. There are three procedures you can do:

    • Procedure 1: Put a small piece of masking tape on the actuator surface on the bottom of the key. If that does not work, pile on more pieces until it works. This has always, eventually, worked for me.

    • Procedure 2: Clean the contact surfaces on the printed circuit board. Although it makes sense, this has never worked for me.

    • Procedure 3: Renew the conducting surfaces on the printed circuit board by re-painting with conductive silver paint. This makes a lot of sense, but I have never tried it. This seems like it should work, though.'''

    • After all of the bad keys are working, reverse the disassembly steps to reassemble.
