We disassembled the LG Gram 15" to see how the Surface/MacBook competitor stacks up.

    • Perhaps slightly more useful knowledge: The only component we cannot remove is the keyboard.

Does Lg use the same part numbers for its Trackpad/Touchpaf for all its models?. I am looking for replacement trackpad for my Lg gram 17” 2019.Can u help me with part number please?.Thanks.

  7. We chose the fan + heatpipe combo. 7 screws and 1 plug Followed closely by the motherboard. No surprises. In total < 10 screws, exactly 6 connectors, and the wireless card. There were some alignment pins that required a tiny bit of finagling, but if you know they're there this will take you less than a minute.

    • Trackpad's next. It's held in with 4 screws and pops out the top of the lower case.

Is the CPU easily removable from the motherboard or is it soldered? In other words, is the processory/chip user-upgradable? Thank you -

  9. Keyboard is hidden beneath thin-film insulator taped in place. If you're performing a keyboard replacement, you'll need to buy replacement adhesive for this film. It's is held in place with 48 screws, which sounds bad, but is par for the course for a repairable laptop. Here, the lack of glue in a laptop this compact is practically a miracle. This info is very helpful. I’m having a hard time finding this replacement keyboard with less than a 2 month lead time. Is there a good site/source to find? Thanks

Half the ram is solderded to the main board. You cannot upgrade to faster ram because of this. If i had know this in advance i would not have bought this laptop. So 9/10 is a bit high.

It appears that the screen is still in the case in the pictures here. Hopefully that can safely be taken apart too as I just ordered a replacement screen. Seeing that this example left the screen in the case, I would agree that 9/10 repairability might be high…

Hi, did you manage to replace the screen successfully?

Bought OEM battery from encompass and replaced battery within 1.5 hours. Notice the phillips head is not the average size. I improvised that step and the tweezers step with a pocket knife (8Cr13moV). For the disconnection of the battery from the motherboard, notice that you must pull the plug out towards the direction of the battery. Breakdown pictures were helpful.

Any idea where I can get a replacement screen for my LG touch screen 15Z980-A.AAS8U1. All I see out there is a non touch screen replacement. Thank you.

The screen and camera are still in case. How easy is it to replace both of them? The gram touch screen can be found at eb@y, but I cannot find the camera part.

Hi Jeff,

Instead of purchasing a new LG gram every time you want to upgrade the processor, would it be relatively feasible to replace the mother board with a new one provided the size PCB is the same size and configuration?

Mine Gram got wet and now cycles on and off. It doesn’t make it through the boot process. It’s dried out now but no change. How can I get a schematic for this laptop. Thanks

Just looking at the picture of the motherboard presented above one can quickly conclude that the “LG GRAM 15 IS INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED TO FAIL WITHIN MONTHS”. Yes, really. Note that the DC jack (upper left corner of the mother board above) is welded to the motherboard. As a result, it will only take a few weeks or a few months for most users to twist that DC jack, separate it from the mother board, and the entire laptop is useless simply because it is close to impossible to weld back the DC jack to the motherboard without burning the nearby components and the motherboard would be too expensive to replace. This is a widely known problem in any cheap mickey mouse laptop. I know this from experience. Back in the days i had a brand new Compaq laptop with this design only lasted one week (no exageration, only one week).

Fernando - Réponse

I learned the hard way, took the time to research and find a laptop where the DC jack is connected to a a cheap power board or to a cheap I/O board so that when it goes bad (and it will because one touches it all the time with our legs) we replace a $5 board and the laptop is back in business. I currently own a 2012 Dell Vostro 3550 for 8 straight years. The DC jack went bad twice, twice I replaced the $5 power board, and the laptop is back in business. It takes a lot time to set up a laptop software the way we like it and once we do, most of us want our laptops to last at least several years. With the DC jack welded to the motherboard most laptops will only last weeks or months.

Fernando - Réponse

LG, if you read this, pls take the above comments as constructive feedback. I love my LG G5 phones (have three of them), have an LG TV, and will strongly consider purchasing an LG Gram 15” if you copy Dell and make the DC jack and all ports that will fail as part of easily replaceable, cheap power or I/O board, NOT WELDED TO THE MOTHERBOARD WHERE THEY WILL ALL FAIL. In addition, pls consider removing the number pad to the keyboard, or having an option to purchase a keyboard without that number pad and installing it ourselves.
