Introduction

This guide will walk you through how to remove the phone's screen, which includes the LCD panel and digitizer.

  1. Power off the phone by pressing the button on the right side of the phone, it will be the smaller button. Press and hold the button down for a few seconds, until the option "Power Off" appears on the screen.

    • Select "Power Off" on the screen to turn off the phone.

  2. Insert a SIM card removal tool into the small hole located on the top right corner of the phone, just above the volume buttons. If you do not have the original packaging or a SIM card removal tool, you may use a straightened out paperclip or something similar. Push the removal tool into the hole and the tray should pop out.

    • Remove the SIM tray from the phone.

There is absolutely no reason to remove the sim tray, we're not removing the motherboard.

  3. Put on heat-resistant gloves and place the phone on a surface that will not catch fire or melt. Using a heat gun, apply slow and even heat to the edges of the back panel. DO NOT stay on one spot for too long, the heat gun can damage the phone if the heat is applied to the same area for a long period of time.

    • While heating the back panel, use a Jimmy to test if the adhesive is soft enough to allow the panel to separate from the device.

    • Carefully detach the back panel, using opening picks to hold the panel apart from the device.

    • Once most of the edges are separated from the device, attach a suction cup to the back panel.

  4. Press the suction cup to the back panel to secure it. With the help of the suction cup, pull up on the panel to completely detach it from the device. Use the suction cup to safely remove the panel from the device. As you work around the panel's edges, the lingering heat may cause the remaining adhesive to reattach the panel to the device, be sure to lift the back panel before the glue has time to set back.

It can't be stressed enough to do this very carefully. I did it very carefully, but not carefully enough. Cracked a corner. Also not just the edges, there's extra adhesive on the lower 2-3 cm's of the back.

Another remark, get in between the black bezel and the back cover, this is a bit unclear on the first picture. Same goes for the front, get in between the bezel and the front assembly.

    • Using a PH000 screwdriver, remove the following seven screws circled with red and orange:

    • Four (longer) PH000 screws

    • Three shorter PH000 screws

    • Once all of the screws are removed, proceed to using a plastic spudger to pry the metal cover off.

    • There are two clips near the bottom, right above the battery, so start by prying on the bottom edge of the plate.

What size of screw goes where?

Check http://imgur.com/wqD9Dis. Orange circles are the smaller screws (3 out of 7 are smaller than the other 4).

    • Using a plastic spudger, gently pry on the clip to release it.

    • This will cut power to the phone, and prevent any power running to any of the components which is important while working on the phone.

  7. On the battery, locate a clear tab. This will be used to pull the battery out. Firmly grasp the clear tab and pull up and away from the phone to remove the battery. Take your time during this step, as you do not want to apply too much force and damage the battery.

    • There is an adhesive underneath the battery so it might be useful to utilize the black plastic spudger to get between the battery and the phone to pry the battery up but be very careful not to break the ribbon cables underneath the battery.

    • Continue to pull slowly on the battery, until it is completely free from the phone.

Strictly speaking, you don't need to remove the battery at all. The connector to the front assembly is underneath the speaker assembly.

If your order the complete part you need to remove it.

The battery is glued in very well and it bends pretty easy. It is wise to order a new battery aswell.

    Chris S. - Réponse

I agree it's nearly impossible to remove the battery without damaging it. Even a tiny little bending can lower the capacity. And if you heat it up too much to soften the glue it can explode. Also never use metal tools on the battery in case u break through the protection foil it won't catch fire.

  8. Once all of the components on the back of the phone have been removed (battery, SIM card, etc), prepare for a battle with your heat gun and "oven mitts". This repair is an end-of-the-line option. Please keep in mind that replacing this screen will most likely damage, crack, or discolour the screen, so it is advised to only do this as a last resort. This should be done at your own risk. Using your heat resistant glove to hold onto the phone, evenly heat the edges of the phone.

    • Spend about 15-20 seconds on a small section about 2 inches long to make sure that it is sufficiently hot to remove the adhesive

  9. After sufficiently heating a section of the edge, use the jimmy tool and slide it between the glass screen and the aluminum bezel of the phone. Proceed to gently slide the jimmy around the area that has been heated to remove the the screen from the adhesive. Having heat resistant gloves are very important as the device will get very hot and will burn your fingers if you come into contact directly with the phone.

    • It might be helpful to use the picks to leave in between the glass and bezel so that the adhesive does not reattach.

    • Continue to follow Steps 1-2 through the perimeter of the phone to remove the adhesive.

  10. After removing the adhesive and the screen is now loose from the phone, you'll notice that it is still attached to the back through a connector. On the back of the phone, unclip the connector to the screen located on the bottom right hand side of the phone using a plastic pry tool. Now that the pin is disconnected, you will have to gently slip the connector through the hole in the back of the phone to free the entire screen.

    • Once the connector is slipped through the hole, the screen should be free from the phone for good.

You'll notice we're missing a step here, the removal of the speaker assembly.. Needed to get to the display connector. Remove all 8 screws. The bottom ones are a tad lager than the top 4 ones, so be sure you don't mix these up.

Also, once you have the front assembly loose, apply a bit of heat to the connector, so you can lift it up a bit. It will block the entry otherwise and you won't be able to pull the flatcable out.

My one plus x got fell from my hand. Now the display slowly getting fading away with blurriness. It's almost completely over the phone now :(

whats the options available now? and what will be the cost of display set for the replacement?

Lakshmi Maguluri - Réponse

If it's just the display screen it's like 5-8 bucks on ebay, but the whole screen+digitizer+touch is like at leas $150, ranging up to 200. Might as well buy a new phone then.

maniac001 - Réponse

(addition) someone on the OPX forum tried to fix the cracked screen only and they said that the digitizer & screen are glued together, they broke the digitizer while trying to separate it. So they had to get the whole digitizer+screen assembly instead which was about $160.

the cheapest I can find now is this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Full-LCD-Dis...

Oneplus X Front Outer Screen Glass?

Sarthak Ahir - Réponse

I'm stuck on step 10 ...... my connector doesn't fit through the hole. Did you lift the ribbon connector for the screen and if so how?

Duncan Gillibrand - Réponse

Hello, my OnePlus X has a shattered glass. However, the touch is working just fine and so is the display. In this case, i need to replace only the front glass, right? Is separating just the glass an easy task or not? Im going to be ordering a glass front online and have a professional do the job. Is that a viable alternative? Please help.

Elizabeth Scots - Réponse

Definitely not a good idea, go for the full display assembly. The digitizer is glued and separating it from the glass is close to impossible without damaging the former, even for professionals, and then you'd have to glue the new glass to the digitizer which isn't exactly easy either.

Where will I get the new LCD display for my OnePlus X, and how much does it costs??

I have found a good OnePlus X screen on eBay, but they are quite expensive, about $100, €85.

Lieven Blancke -

My glass is cracked. Touch and display are just fine. I found a touch+digitizer online. Can this procedure be [relatively] safely used to replace those but keeping the display?

It would be performed by a professional who had never worked on this model before.

Wouldn't like him to damage other components. He does a fine job with other phones.

Acente - Réponse

My phone got wet. After a few days drying out it now boots. The display is fine but the time and date are incorrect and the digitiser is completely unresponsive so I can't get past the lock screen. Do I definitely need to replace it or is it possible that it is just a connector that needs cleaning/ drying or another could the failure of another component give these symptoms?

Jeremy Taffel - Réponse

Hello,

I have oneplus x and its glass got broken, touch is working fine. How do I replace the glass? Or where do I find the glass.
