Introduction
Follow this guide to replace a dead or worn-out battery in your Steam Controller (2nd Gen, 2026).
The lithium-ion battery in your Steam Controller has a limited lifespan. If your controller doesn't hold a charge, dies unexpectedly, or only works when plugged in, the battery may need to be replaced.
If your battery is swollen, take appropriate precautions.

Unplug all cables and accessories from the controller, including the Steam Controller Puck.

Use a T6 Torx screwdriver to remove the seven screws securing the back cover.

Throughout this repair, keep track of each screw and make sure it goes back exactly where it came from.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
Calibrate your newly installed battery after completing this guide.
Take your e-waste to an R2 or e-Stewards certified recycler.
