Use the balance wheel (also know as the hand wheel) to advance the sewing machine  until the needle has sunk into the fabric. The balance wheel should only be turned in the direction that advances the sewing machine. Usually, this means turning the wheel towards you. Turning the wheel in the opposite direction can ruin the tension on the sewing machine, causing it to jam. See your sewing machine manual for instructions specific to your machine.

Tournez le volant de la machine pour que l’aiguille descende et s’enfonce complètement dans le tissu.

Vous devez tourner le volant dans le sens qui permet de faire avancer la pièce à coudre. Généralement, vous allez donc le tourner vers vous. Si vous tournez le volant dans l’autre sens, vous risquez de modifier la tension de la machine et donc de provoquer un bourrage de fil.
