Do yourself a favor and remove the display assembly from the computer first.
You do need to follow basically this whole procedure for a thermal paste replacement.

This is correct.
Some information in the top title area was misleading, as the iPod isn’t sold anymore (except for the touch with a soldered battery) and the iPhone has had a socketed battery since 2008. I fixed it in the latest unverified version.
Be VERY CAREFUL when removing this cable and also putting it back.
Reading through the guide, I have confirmed that this should work without adjustments for macOS Catalina down to Mac OS X Lion, as long as you create a USB flash drive correctly with the correct operating system on it.
Step 14 is not required to disassemble the device, as long as you don’t pull the cables too hard. The cables are long enough.
