Contrairement à la Nintendo Switch d'origine, la Switch Lite est une console de jeu purement portable et ne peut pas être ancrée ou connectée à un téléviseur. Elle n'a pas non plus de Joy-Cons amovibles. Ces sacrifices, cependant, s'accompagnent d'un prix beaucoup plus bas : 209 €, contre 299 €.

Bien que les manettes intégrées du Switch Lite ne puissent pas se détacher, les manettes Joy-Con amovibles conçus pour la Switch d'origine peuvent toujours être associées à la Switch Lite.
