L'iPhone 3G est le premier iPhone compatible avec la navigation web 3G. L'iPhone 3G de 8 Go est complètement noir (coques avant et arrière) avec des boutons latéraux argentés, mais la version 16 Go est disponible en noir ou en blanc.

En termes de réparabilité, l'iPhone 3G n'est pas trop mauvais. L'ensemble écran s'enlève assez facilement à l'aide d'une ventouse et de quelques outils d'ouverture en plastique. La vitre frontale se replace indépendamment de l'ensemble écran, ce qui permet d'économiser quand on veut réparer un écran fissuré. Comme le téléphone est construit d'arrière en avant, la coque arrière est la pièce la plus dure à changer et nécessite un démontage complet de l'appareil.
