How do I replace my CD/DVD RAM drive?

I was unable to find the repair manual on Acer's website, but saw your website had several fixes for other things except for what I need. How do I replace the CD/DVD drive in my Acer Aspire 5100 (Model BL51)?

I can eject a disc with a paperclip, but I suspect there is a loose cable on the drive or it needs replaced unless there is another way to load a different device driver if it is not hardware related.

Windows XP Media Center Edition has problems starting the device with the Windows built-in drivers for the CD/DVD RAM drive. I've tried to remove/uninstall the device in Device Manager with no success of different results. You cannot install drivers manually as it is a "plug n play" device.

Windows says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

The drive is a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-850S according to what Windows XP MCE detects.

Acer's website does not have any drivers for the device either. Please advise what I can do.

Thank you in advance.

It looks like this is an easy replacement. Find a compatible replacement drive and use these instructions. http://www.laptopinventory.com/LaptopInv...

There should be a single screw on the bottom and a release button on the drive itself, and it should pop right out. As far as the software install, it should be plug and play. When you power on the laptop after replacing the drive, windows should see it and look for the drivers for it. I imagine this is an easy job. Good luck!!

Hi,

I would recommend you to take your laptop to a local repair shop, buy a DVD ROM and ask him to replace it in your laptop this way you can avoid any damage to your laptop. Plus you will have a compatible DVD ROM in your laptop.
