Poor GSM Signal following Digitizer Replacement.

Block Image

Hi,

I recently replaced the digitizer/lcd assembly on an iPhone 4S. That all went well, but the signal on the iPhone now is terrible compared to before (keeps saying NO SERVICE).

I have inspected the logic board closely, and I believe one of the small capacitors(?) has broken off (its not one of the blue ones).

Can anyone confirm if this capacitor would effect the signal strength? (Image attached with circle around where the part is missing from). Also, I just noticed on the photo itself, far left blue capacitor looks almost like its broken ?!

Any advice appreciated.

Sean, looking at the location of the components I am pretty sure that this could easily be related to your signal strength. You also did properly identify the component to the left as broken. It is the coil L47_RF 5.6NH+/-0.2NH-470MA CERM-X5R 0402 (most likely the same a Murata LQW04AN5N6D00D) and is part of GPS circuitry. The component to the right is capacitor C46_RF 10UF 20% 6.3V CERM-X5R 0402 (consistent with a Samsung MLCC, CL10 Series,CL10A106MQ8NNNC), and is part of the radio Band 2 and Band 5 circuitry.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Thank you for your reply, most informative. Are these parts easily obtainable do you know ? Not sure if I have to Google the whole part of each component, or if just a section of it will do (i.e. CERM-X5R 0402)?

Many thanks.

I just edited the manufacturer as well as the part numbers. Not sure where you are located, but it appears as if the components are pretty common and readily available at places like Mouser.com, Digikey.com etc. when you do a search, look for the values i.e. 10UF 20% 6.3V the last part usually denotes the package of the component. That would be the physical attributes of the component, for the 0402 it means a size of 0.25 × 0.125 mm
