washer will not agitate or spin but does drain and pump water...

This is for the older type whirlpool / kenmore top loader washer 70 series.

It stopped spinning and agitating and I was so sure it was a coupler I bought one before I even went under. I than went under and saw no damage to the coupler. I also removed the entire transmission and motor essembly and did not find any damaged coupler or clutch. Both are fine. Now that my unit is dissassambled I really do not know what else can it be or how I have to check it. Can anyone help? thank you

The drive coupling is the first choice but by far not the only, get in there with a multimeter and start eliminating possibilities:

Drive Belt

If the washer won't spin or agitate, check the drive belt. If the belt is broken or if it isn't tight on the pulleys the washer won't spin or agitate properly.

Lid Switch Assembly

If the washer won't spin the lid switch assembly might be defective. This is a very common problem. The lid switch assembly can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any electrical switches with an Ohm meter for continuity. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Drive Motor

If the washer won't spin or agitate the drive motor might be defective. This is not common. Check all of the other related parts to this symptom before replacing the motor. If the motor is visibly burned out or physically damaged, replace it.

Stator Assembly

If the washer won't spin or agitate the rotor assembly might be bad or damaged. The rotor is essentially one half of a motor, it interacts with the tub by creating a strong electro-magnet. If the stator fails or is damaged the washer might not spin or agitate. Check the stator for damaged windings or other defects.

jesus christ! how do I check all those things? never used a multimeter though do have one. when I turn the coupler by hand it does agitate and spin the long stick (pardon my ignorant jargon) so I guess the transmission is OK? belt should be too, no? how do I check all of that? wish there was videos n how to check these things. thank you so much for your help. I just have to figure out how to do what you said I should do.
