New hard drive will not show in Disk Utility

Installed a new Western Digital ATA 5400 RPM 160GB hard drive, but new drive does not show up in disk utility to erase and format. Checked all the connections twice, but still doesn't show up. Any ideas? Could the new HD be bad?

It should be able to recognize the drive even if the formatting is wrong. If you're positive you got the connection right, it could be a bad drive (I've had DOA drives before.) Is there another enclosure you can stick the drive in to test it? You can get universal connectors for about $10, like this:

It's a pretty handy thing to have around anyway.

Agreed about the handiness of an enclosure or universal connector to test drives. Also, I'd recommend loading a new operating system into a new drive (or clone it from the old drive) before installing it into a computer, just to be certain it's working properly.

I had the same problem. The PowerBook saw the PATA hard drive but the option to repair the disk was grayed out. Tried to partition it into smaller sections but it kept failing (timing out). Finally took the whole thing apart and reseated the hard drive and it worked! Thought I was going to have to return the new hard drive but thanks to your correspondence, I was able to get over this hurdle (even though it was 6 months ago!). I am new to this site, but I love it already! Thanks to everyone for your help!!

Was the drive formatted to Mac OSX Journaled Before you installed it?

Your iBook may not recognize the drive since it may not be able to recognize the factory default format.

Try formatting it to OSX Journaled first then install the drive.

Let us know how this works out.

Good Luck!

Like Colleen said, the drive might be dead. To rule that out, try taking the drive out, and getting an IDE to USB adapter to test out the drive individually. If that works, then we know that the HDD is fine and its somewhere between the connection and the logic board (maybe, if the problem is hardware)

Did you try to use another Mac OS X Install DVD? Another version perhaps?
