I need a new circuit board for my 7th gen 160 GB iPod, but I was told that it would wipe all the music on my hard drive if I replaced it. Is that true??

Phil Moseley, once you replace the logciboard and plug your iPod in, iTunes will want to restore your iPod. this could lead to losing your music. I suggest that you get a USB-to-Zif connector and plug your hard drive into your computer. Than use a program like the free once or programs like Copytrans and many others, to access your music and back it up. you can then restore your iPod and resync your saved music with iTunes.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer. I'm trying to fix this for my son. I use PC and he uses Mac.
I tried USB-to-zif on Ebay and it came up with several hits . Would you PLEASE send me a link to the one I need? Do I remove the hard drive and plug Zif interface ribbon into it - like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-2-0-to-1-8-C...
Or can I just connect the Ipod port to a USB port on my PC and use the software to put his music on my PC?
Should I wipe the hard drive or should I let iTunes do its "fixing" thing through his Mac. Then - if necessary - I could overwrite it with what I have saved on the PC?
Opinion please?

Yes the cable in your link will work. You will have to remove the drive to get access to it. Let iTunes fix the firmware and do it on the computer that your son will be using. That way there will be no OS conflict.
