Upgraded to El Capitain stuck on past splash page

I just upgraded an iMac to El Capitain and it stuck on the splach page. It would boot but just get stuck at the splash screen, loading bar would go all the way but then just get stuck, tried booting to safemode , ran disk util and to get to the terminal and played around in there nothing. Anyway decided to reinstall and its no joy stuck in the same spot. so I shut it down and decide to take a break from it . come back after 2 hours and figure id give it another try start the computer and it boots fine. Can anyone tell me whats going on . I dont want to return the machine till I know its going to work fine Can some of you Mac gurus give a hand here

When the original update was don it was on a NIS it was then unmounted and move to do further testing it booted without the NIS so remounted it and it seems to be running fine now so I think it was the NIS . Im gonna check the logs now that its booted and see if thats the reason

par

What's a NIS?

par

Thanks for the help

par

NIS is network information service a client–server directory service protocol for distributing system configuration data

How's that working for you? Never used one, sounds like PC or UNIX to me.
