I have purchased a WD3200AAJB to add to my HD in Mac G4, MDD, 1,25GhZ (dual). Is it compatible? If so, do I have to do something to it to make a master drive and make the existing disk a slave drive? If so, what do I haev to do to make the existing drive a slave drive?

You got the correct drive. There are jumper pins on the drives. One has to be set to Master (with slave) and the other jumped as a slave. Go to the manufacturers web site and do a search for "jumper setting", that should do it. If you need help just give us the name of the second drive and model number. It doesn't matter which one is master or slave.

The WD drive (Master) has 10 pins for jumper shunt. The second(older, and may be dead)(slave) is IBM DeskStar 120 GB, IC35L120AVVA07-0. It has 9 pins for jumper shunt. Thanks again.

OK folks, I am back after three days hiatus--necessity. I have installed the new disk in the Master slot and the old disk in the slave slot. Powered them both with the yellow wire on the outside (away from shunts). Both disks are in the cable select mode. I have tried to boot up the machine in Shift-s, Shift-v, and from the Install CD (which has been in the optical drive all along). In the first two cases, a white screen appears with a question mark, then changes to another whitish screen with the APPLE, but no revolving gear. With the Install disk, it goes straight to the whitish screen with APPLE, followed by a revolving gear, which stops after it gets tired. I also tried to boot up, assuming the old drive was alive and could be used as a start up disk. Same result. So now, I have run out of options to boot up. Please help. Many thanks in advance. skb
Sorry for not getting back to you. Before installing two drives, make sure that one has a bootable system folder and start with one drive. Select it as the "Start up" drive. Then add the second drive and reset the jumpers.

Actually, one of the major rules or putting hard drives in pre-sata macs is to make sure all of the drives are set to "cable select" on their jumper block. The drive you have in your mac currently is almost certainly set to cable select already, but if it isn't, you should set it, as it will improve performance. With most western digital drives, cable select is putting the jumper on the last set all the way to the right, like this guide shows. But the hard drive already in the computer may be different.

Can you support this claim? I've done this for a lot of years and never heard of it on a Mac. Did you bring this from the PC world?
