The disk has been noisy when booting up, now it just spins briefly then does nothing. Read the drive in a caddy and found all data, so I'm guessing the drive is ok, is this a main board issue or something else?

Nvidia GPU is on its way out. Either attempt reflow or have someone replace the chip it or buy a reconditioned one with warranty. I would opt for a service swapping your board for a one already with the chip replaced not reballed. Reflowing if done Correctly can provide good results but really is temporary solution to permanent problem.
