Why is my iPad screen frozen

My iPad which was on the settings app all of a sudden reduced the size of the app screen to that of what you see when in multitasking and froze. I cannot get the screen to respond to any gestures other than "Control center" and "Notification center" Nor does it rotate. I cannot power down it either. If the screen is turned of with the power button it want show the screen again. I connected it to my MAC and iTunes and the device seems to be working internally. I can back up and do all the stuff on that but nothing happens on the iPad screen. Please help to identify what has gone wrong.

The OS is iOS 9.3.2 most current for the device. (I have noticed the device not being responsive to touch as it used to be before upgrading to the current version).

Hard resetting the iPad by pressing and holding the home and sleep buttons simultaneously (given in a solution on this forum as well as on apple forums) helped to reset the device. However this only worked after I got the screen back (after the device went to sleep/pressing the sleep button) from sleeping by pressing and holding the sleep button and pressing the home button and releasing both simultaneously. This button sequence was discovered by accident though.
