I have Sony model KDL-V40XBR1 whose speakers and headphone jack do not output any audio.

Around May 2015, the audio began cutting out.

I learned that gently banging the back panel nearby the speakers with the base of my hand would restore the audio.

Soon, the banging shifted upwards and towards the center.

I believe it was sometime in 2017 when this workaround ceased working.

Ever since then, I routed its audio via RCA cables to my A/V receiver.

In the WEGA Gate menu, the audio section is totally disabled.

To troubleshoot, I performed the factory reset...no progress.

Next, I managed to remove the K card and I still got audio through my A/V receiver.

I reinstalled the K card.

Unfortunately, I do not have a multimeter or voltmeter to check such measurements to verify that any component is 100% faulty.

Given the above, should I replace the K card? Thank you.

Here's some advice from Sony's troubleshooting website if you are having good picture but no sound:

- Check the volume level.

- Press MUTING or VOL + so that “Muting” disappears from the screen.

- Set Speakers to TV Speakers in the Sound settings. If it is set to Audio System, sound is not output from the TV’s speakers regardless of the TV’s volume control.

- When using HDMI input with Super Audio CD or DVD-Audio, DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (Optical) may not provide an audio signal.

- When tuned to a digital channel with Alternate Audio, the broadcaster may not be broadcasting your preferred Alternate Audio language. Press OPTIONS, highlight and select Alternate Audio, and change the Alternate Audio language.

I change the alternate audio option and it works, but if I change the channel and go back to the channel the setting to alternate audio changed automatically and there's no sound again. I don't want to be changing the alternate option everytime I change the channel. Is there a way to save the settings without being change automatically by channel signal ?

I had the same issue on my Bravia tv, the sound mute was on and there was no way to unmute or increase or decrease the volume. It’s almost as if the functions to unmute or volume buttons are disabled.

I then followed the above proposed solution to restart the tv. I had to also restart 3 times before it working. The 2nd restart was into a safe mode and the last restart made it work. Thanks for the advise

Bravia UR3 55 inches,

Press home button on the remote

Arrow up to the top line and over to settings

Enter and down to device settings, enter and then to About

Down to Restart

Good luck

par

SOLVED - hold down the power button on the remote for two seconds until the restart pops up on the screen. Choose restart. The TV should turn off. It will then restart and that should solve the sound problem.

I was just working through this problem on my Sony Bravia 4K TV.

My PS4 suddenly has no sound one day. TV menu HAS sound.

The final fix was a SECRET FREAKING RESET OPTION IN THE TV. I did not find ANY guide that mentions this. It’s in the “About” section of the TV. Not in Settings, not in Audio or Inputs or Help section. In the stupid freakin ABOUT section. There’s your make, model, and a button to restart the tv that fixes it perfectly. I was so frustrated after hours of searching for what caused my sound to stop working.

Thank you so much. That just solved my sound issue on my Sony Bravia. It just started happening in the last 4 days. Order a new Joey from Dish thinking it was that. Restart under About section did the trick. 15 dollars and hours wasted but glad I didn’t have to buy a new TV. Thanks!!!

thank you so much. This solved my sound issue on a friend's tv. Sound stopped working. Cable company spent two hours trying to fix and nothing worked. Finding the ABOUT menu and resetting the TV fixed it in about 5 mins. Thank you so much for posting this solution. More people need to see this if they have a Sony Bravia 4K tv.

Where is the about menu?

par

To get to this “about” menu, press the home button on the remote. Go all the way to the bottom of this menu, to the Settings icon. Go all the way to the bottom of this settings menu to get to the “ about” button. It is actually called Restart.

This fix my problem with the no sound. Thanks asdsadsa!

I don't seem to have this on my Bravia model KDL-32EX400... I have a settings menu where I managed to do a factory restart. I can hear the beeps when I'm in the menus so the speakers are obviously working, but I can't find a Restart option anywhere.

I recently updated my Sony XBR-65A1E to Android 8, and the TV sound didn't work after the update. Sound from HDMI devices came through, however with no volume control or mute capability. The menu sound effects worked. I tried poweroff-poweron, restart (My restart is located at Settings->About->Restart ),factory-reset(which took forever),restart again,factory-reset again(which went much quicker the second time-odd), and finally restart again while on the main menu screen after volume-up and NOT muted. The last restart fixed the audio, as good as new or better with the android/system upgrade. I have no idea whether all of those actions are necessary, but that's what I did, and my system-updated XBR-65A1E TV audio works again. Be aware that the factory reset fully erases the TV's data, so all personalizations and customizations (settings) are lost. The restart function is like a power cycle/hardware reset (power-off then power-on) and does NOT appear to erase or change any settings. Also, I forgot to mention that I disabled USB audio routing in the Android developer options, since Sony says to remove all USB devices, however, I can't easily reach behind my TV to do that. That might have also contributed to the fix. Also, I just read that the restart can be performed by holding down the power key on the remote for several seconds, so you don't need to use the about menu.

Unfortunately, my HDTV is one among the 1st generation, so it isn't a smart TV. Given its age, it would be more cost effective to welcome the new technology by getting a new one. Thanks.

I had an issue with my Sony Bravia where the volume and mute buttons on the remote and the TV would not work after the latest firmware update.

I tried tinkering with the settings, all of the regular fixes in here and on Sony's support pages & factory reset but they didn't work. I eventually fixed it by taking the USB for my PS4 charger cable out of the TV usb port and restarting the TV.

I guess because the PS4 controller has a speaker built in, the TV was thinking this was some audio out device. Hope this helps anyone with the same issue.

My Sony Bravia 4k tv doesn't have sound in only 1 HDMI port... The one with the good picture. It picks up broadcasts in 1080P. HDMI 3 is the one I use for the Blu-ray player. I'm forced to watch TV on AVI which only picks up 480P. I tried an optical cable but, no luck. Next, I'll try restarting it. Then I'll try my luck with a soundbar but I'm not getting my hopes up, and oh yeah, not even Sony earbuds will connect with the Bluetooth setting.

Solved: No sound on just one channel!

I had to call the TV repair guy because I was stumped. All the sound problems I've read about were regarding no sound at all on all channels. I had a unique problem where I wasn't receiving sound from just channel 2. The repair guy was stumped as well at first, so through process of component elimination he solved the problem. He said, lets eliminate the STB and plug the cable (antenna), directly into the TV and do an initial setup to automatically search for all channels. That worked!! I was now receiving sound on all my channels including channel 2. He said that there must be something wrong with the STB that wasn't allowing the sound from channel 2. He said all you have to do is re-channel your cable through the wall like you have the other cables to tidy everything up.

So, after thinking about what we did, I thought, how about if I plug the cable back into the STB and do the initial setup to automatically search for all channels again. I needed this STB box to record TV shows. I really didn't want to loose this capability. Well to my surprise, It worked!! Go figure! For some strange reason the STB decided to drop the audio on just one channel. So glad to have my Sony Bravia working again.

Turned on my Sony Bravia XBR-43X800H this morning, only to find that there was no sound on any channels (antenna).

TV is NOT on mute, and was working fine last night before I went to bed. I know my way around electronics, menus, and remotes.

I also noticed that 9 of my OTA channels (Scripps/ION) were now completely missing. I rescanned those and did not get anything. Not even a flicker. They had been perfect - with next to zero interference for the whole last year.

AND one of those channels, QVC, showed CBS Mornings (?!!) as the current program on the now otherwise blank channel. Completely weird.

Also, the channel Guide still shows all the programming for the (lost) 9 channels.

Is the complete lack of sound on any channel, PLUS the loss of nine Scripps/ION channels (at the same exact time) a coincidence? I can't believe it to be.

Anyhow, a restart cleared the volume issue. But a rescan did not find any new channels OR get back the 9 that I lost.
