My router suddenly quit working and won't turn on

Is it plugged into an outlet controlled by a switch? Maybe the switch is in the off position.


I had the same issue


Rooter gets too hot when charging or it's being used is it ok? It still new it doesn't have a month.


One Plug Off and Plug On it


Well my light was on. The computer said no internet connection. I held the light control on until it went off and now it wont turn back on. I only have one button i can push on the netgear

Are there any lights, especially the power light (is it blinking green and amber or is it solid green) showing on the router when you power it up and turn it on?

(A blinking green and amber power light indicates corrupted firmware in the router which may be rectified by reinstalling the firmware).

If so which lights are on?

If not have you got a compatible known working power adapter to see if it works with it.

(see image , select for your location - they are all 12V DC 1A output only the input varies to suit your location - make sure that the DC plug is compatible with the router as well)

If there is still no light indications at all with a new adapter then there is a problem with the power circuits in the router.

On my charter modem, all lights are on except the power light. Is it possible it is on and the light is just burnt out. Thanks

Is the modem working OK, i.e. can you access the internet or your email servers etc?

Can you access the modem's User Interface OK?

If the answer to both of the above is yes then there is a good chance that the modem's power light is faulty, possibly due to a bad connection to the light somewhere in the modem, as it is unusual for LED lights to fail. (although it can happen).

What is the model number of your modem?

If the answer to the above is no, it may be that the modem is locked up somehow, if so try resetting it by operating the reset button which on most modems is located under a pinhole in the back of the modem case. (don't know your modem so I'm only guessing it is the same)

If it resets OK you'll have to re enter all your ISP relevant settings again


@jayeff none of my router lights are on at all randomly earlier this afternoon the WiFi symbol disappeared from my phone so I went to the living room just to see if I had to the usual reset process but instead I looked at my router and realized it wasn’t even showing the power symbol I’ve called support and they seem to be no help do u have a solution by any chance

What is the make and model number of your router if not a Netgear WGR614v9?

Have you checked that the power outlet to which the router is connected is OK?

Have you got another compatible power adapter that you can try to see if that works?

When you are unable to access the internet through your Netgear wifi and getting a solution orange wifi light. It shows the issues with your network or router settings. here, in this blog, I am sharing the steps to get your internet light problem resolved.

1. Check the cable connection between router and modem; make sure your modem is able to acknowledge the router.

2. Router or computer settings are invalid; you must be entering the wrong wifi name or password, that's why you can't identify the network name or password.

3. Let’s power cycle the router and modem for a while, and then try to reaccess the network. Let’s see if it is allowing you to access the network now or not?

4. Let’s update the mac cloning and then retry to access the network. let’s see what do you see there now.

5. If you are still getting the orange lithg on your access point, you should reset it and configure it once again to make it working properly.

Now When netgear router stoped working you are left with limited options of troubleshooting. any wrong step would cause more issues & disruption with internet so when i had this problem i did my research & same up with a game plan see if this is helpful to you also-

first off lets start with Quick & easy ways or understanding the issue-

check Isp/Modem Disconnect the netgear router from modem & connect the laptop directly with modem to make sure the isp (internet Provider) is working. if not then the problem is with modem. ust to make sure it working or not. or you can also see the internet light on modem is flickering or red instead of Green or blue.

firmware update/overheating any new firmware update requirement or overheating of router may also disrupt internet connectivity. turn off the router along with modem & let it cool off for next 5 minutes. after that login netgear router console to check for the latest available firmware. in this way uou have also performed power cycle of your netgear router & modem so try you luck & see if this gets netgear going again.

reset/restore settings Now when nothing seem to work you are left with last option to reset all settings back to default & see if that works for you. find a paper clip or pen & power on the netgear router. press & hold the reset key for next 20 seconds & when you see all lights flashing on netgear router do let the reset key go & restart the router.

Now you would require to setup the netgear router from start so try this guides on netgear router not working & how to setup the netgear router after reset. i did find all information from the link above that helped me fix my issue. see if the same steps may work for you too.

Double check power cord at wall and at router. Locate the router power button and make sure it’s in the on position. If the router piggy-backs off another router unplug both routers and power up routers.
