Ken, This is a big job in a full size GM van. I believe the entire dash has to be unbolted/screwed and propped up or removed to access the heater core for removal. These instructions are from 2carpros, JACOBANDNICKOLAS

Disconnect the battery ground cable.

Remove the engine cover.

Remove the steering column-to-instrument panel bolts. Lower the column carefully.

Remove the upper and lower instrument panel attaching screws. Remove the radio support bracket screw.

Raise and support the right side of the instrument panel.

Remove the lower right instrument panel bracket.

Remove the vacuum actuator from the kick panel.

Disconnect the temperature cable and vacuum hoses at the case. Remove the heater distributor duct from over the engine hump.

Remove the two defroster duct-to-firewall attaching screws below the windshield.

Under the hood, disconnect and plug the heater hoses at the firewall.

Remove the three nuts and one screw (inside) holding the heater case to the firewall.

Remove the case from the van. Remove the gasket for access to the screws holding the case together. Remove the temperature cable support bracket. Remove the screws and separate the case. Remove the heater core.

Will post a couple links to Vid's and to a Van forum, to show what you could be into if changing the heater core in your Chevy/GMC van. Good luck.

I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

There is a seam in the dash to the right of the doghouse, cut through it, flip up the right side of the cut dash, there are 3 outer and two inner fasteners to remove, and the three under the hood are mastic covered stamped nuts, under the dash are the other two for the heater cover, and they are 8mm case screws. one hour job. Use seam sealer on the stamped steel nuts under the hood to waterproof them again.

I did mine this way, but it was an all day job because the plastics are so brittle and poorly engineered that it’s more like archeology than anything else. Long term I plan to design and fabricate something better, while making it custom in line with my vintage feel shag wagon esthetic.

What did you cut the dash with? It takes a little patience but using a 3" round blade on a multi-tool, and a 3-3/8" mini circular saw, AND SOMETIMES even a router bit in a drywall cutout tool or Dremel is just the right tool for the job- it is not a "one tool does it all" type of cut when you halve a dash to do a heater core.

I used an angle grinder. The entire experience was so frustrating that since my project involves a custom space age groovy dashboard and doghouse reimagination, I plan to redesign it in a way that makes rational sense.

Yes your very helpful and I enjoy the fact you don't beat around the bush, I know everything about the van that there is to know but for personal reasons I had to read what you had to say. Thank you
