How to reflash? DVD

This is something I'm very new to-am fixing friends broken xbox RROD and now I have been asked to replace/repair a DVD drive.

Have done some reading which says I need to flash the drive (marry the drive to motherboard?)

could someone put this in simple english for me.

Been googling etc and found pages of do this, do that, buy my DVD. Most assume I have a clue about what they're on about and to be honest I'm an idiot that needs an answer that doesn't assume I know anything about anything and is without all the abbreviations...

It looks like it should be simple but the more i read the more confusing it gets!

I've done it once and followed the instructions on here. http://www.360-hq.com/xbox-tutorials-61.... The main thing I did learn is to stay with similar drives by the same manufacturer, so I had a Hitachi and got a new Hitachi of ebay Most of the software that you will require for the Firmware flashing is available at http://www.xbins.org/ It is not hard to do but I found it tedious and a pain in the neck. Best of luck to you

Sorry forgot....the other way of proceeeding is to exchange the printed circuit board of your drive. You will need to purchase an identical drive, and replace the board from the drive you want to exchange with the new one. This way your firmware does not need to be flashed since it has the original key in its chip....

which printed circuit board? and by drive do you mean DVD? sorry but things are familiar if you have done it and for me it's like wading through mud! how I manage to tie my shoe laces or fix iphones is a mystery!

Sorry about that. I should have made myself a little bit clearer. The printed circuit board from the drive IS replaceable. Of course that will only work if you replace a non-functioning drive with the same make and model. I usually try and pick those up on ebay. So you could in theory replace the printed circuit board from the old drive with the one from the new drive. Most of the time the drives suffer from some sort of mechanical error and thus the circuit board is usable. This way you are transferring the "key" which is what mates the xbox to its peripherals. If you are unsure take an old CD drive and give it a go

ok. looked at your links. I've got a mac. done a bit of searching and it would seem flashing with a mac is a pretty hard task... might just put this one in the too hard basket and let them sort it out themselves!

Thank you.

I had the same problem of it not reading games. I did the fix where I swapped out the circuit boards. There were two ribbon cables and nine super easy wires to solder. Lucky for me they were identical drives. Thanks for the ideas.
