Car won't turn over

Car won't turn over. Got a new battery and the starter is fine. We think the problem is electronic. We unplugged the battery and when we plugged it back in the radio turned itself on and then the windshield wipers moved and i never touched the switch.

This is on a 1995 chevy cavalier 2.2L base model

Possible things to check out.

Check the cables connected to the battery to make sure there is a solid connection, a poor connection will not allow enough power to the starter. After that, I would check the fuse box to make sure the starter fuse is not blown, if that was fine. I would take the starter out and have it tested at your local autoparts store (if you havent already). Kragen, Autozone, Oreily, etc... check them for free.

Other possible problems causing engine not to turn over: bad starter solenoid, broken ignition switch, broken timing chain, bad ignition coil, dead electronic control module

Here is a training manual, it might help: http://www.prestolite.com/pgs_training/t...

Only one thing to add, also check the ground connections. I once encountered this very problem and it was because the bolt that held the ground strap down had worked its way loose. After tightening it, it ran like a dream.

I have this same problem so I added. Switch to the starter after replacing the starter and the ignition switch and now the car starts with no problem. My diagnosis is there must be a bad connection in the harness that goes after a long while of usage. Try adding a couple of wires and a switch. I’m willing to bet it will crank. You other guys that are cranking but no start need to check fuel pumps and crank and cam sensors. I guarantee it’s most definitely one of those issues. Good luck to all of you.

If the engine is cranking really slow, the problem is more than likely the battery charge is too low, or the starter itself is dragging. Try jumping it off with another vehicle while you attempt to start it. If it starts, one or the other is your problem. If it's cranking normally, check to see if you're getting fuel and spark.

I have near the same issue with many more symptoms. I'm thinking it's wiring under the steering wheel, I found a forum awhile ago that suggested putting the wheel in the highest position and it worked. Started fine for months but just started doing it again. Going to have to go look at what wires were getting crunched and have degraded.

I had a 1993 Cavalier that would not keep running unless you held the key in the start position. The problem wass the ignition switch, and there was actually a recall for the problem. Not sure if it applies to the 95 models, but you might want to try holding the switch in the start position, and see what happens.
