I bought two mac ibooks model M8413, but they came without the operating system.
What operating system is recommended for this mac and how do I install it onto the computer?

The latest system the G3 iBooks can run is OS 10.4.11. That's the Mac system known as Tiger. You can buy it used on DVD from places like Ebay. You install it by putting the DVD into your computer's slot and following the instructions. Even though it's an old OS, it's not particularly cheap -- since there are plenty of people like yourself who are using old computers that can use it. You could probably get OS 10.2 or 10.3 cheaper -- and they actually might run a bit faster on an older computer like this than 10.4 would.

10.5 still has PPC support, does it not support G3?
I think 10.5 requires faster processors than the G3s offer. I'm going by Mactracker, which shows 10.4.11 as the max for the G3 iBooks. http://mactracker.dreamhosters.com/
Also you might want to make sure your optical drive is correct for the OS your installing. (10.3 comes in cd's--10.4 or 10.5 require a dvd drive) Ralph

You can install any version of Mac OS X up to 10.4 (tiger) on an iBook. When you say they came 'without the operating system' I'm assuming your saying that the HDD's are just blank. So to install you must boot the computer from the install disk you get (I'll get to that in a second) by pressing option when turning on the computer. Then, follow the steps to install (and if necessary format the drive) mac os x.
To purchase an install disk you'll have to check ebay or other equivalent., I'd go with 10.4 as it's the latest system you can get.
