My mac became really slow and now it's stuck in the loading screen

iMac Intel 27" EMC 2639 (I don't know the EMC 2639 I can't access my computer)

It's just stuck there. I can't escape the loading at all. I tried finding solutions online to my similar problem, but they don't work I tried every thing!

Please help, I need this for school.

Edit:

I tried using other methods of helping my computer. I unplugged the computer for one try (it didn't work..) but it loaded all the way here. The thing is, it's stuck here now!

Your system should be one of these: EMC 2639. Does any of them look correct?

Do you have access to a second Mac system and a Thunderbolt cable to interconnect them? What we need to do here is setup your system in Target Disk Mode so you can either fix your drive or find out if its failed.

MacOS Sierra: Transfer files between two computers using 'Target Disk Mode'

I have a 2012 iMac 27" Intel-core i7 and I don't have any laptops or devices that have a thunderbolt port at all.

1. Try booting in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift Key on startup.

2. Boot up holding down the Option key and select the Repair partition and run Disk Utilities.

Should I do it while it's loading? Because nothing at all works when it loads to the certain point.

par

Do it as soon as you boot or neither will work.

par

But I can't boot it..

par

Do it as soon as you hit the start button

I can't get out of the loading process. It will automatically start loading trying to open the computer. Yesterday it loaded all the way but wouldn't show me anything, no desktop screen just the "finished" progress of the loading bar. It also is giving me a flashing file with a question mark on it. I was sure that my system was corrupted and now I'm 100% sure it is.

Hopefully you have a friend who has a Mac. Instead of trying to connect your system to another Mac, you'll need to setup a bootable USB thumb drive to boot your system up from so you can checkout your internal drive.

You'll need a 32 GB USB thumb drive and working from your friends system follow this guide: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive.

Then plug in the USB thumb drive and hold the Tab key when you get the bong or if its turned off when the Apple logo shows up. This will take you to the Boot Manager to select the the USB drive. Then let your system boot up. As the USB interface is not as fast as your internal connection it will take a bit of time. Once started you'll want to go to the menu bar and select Disk Utility to test your internal drive. You might be able to gain access to the drive. If you can you might want to try to salvage what you can onto a second USB drive using a different USB port (don't pull the booted USB drive).

Let us know how it goes.

It's maybe worth noting that there is a piece of software called "Transmac" that allows you to make a bootable disk on windows. Although a bit more technical and requires the .DMG from another source.

@thethirdtwin - Yes, it's a bit of work, I gave it a try following this guide: Guide To Prepare Bootable USB Of Mac OS X On Windows PC.

The only drawback here is you still need to get the OS downloaded from the Apple App Store which can't be accessed from a Windows system. If you have access to the file locally you likely have access to a Mac. Yes a bit of a catch22 problem ;-{

par

Yeah, it's a handy tool, but requires the foresight of already having the DMG backed up.

par

@thethirdtwin - At that point it would just be proactive to create the installer USB drive before you got into trouble on your Mac ;-}

Which is what I recommend. All of our field people have a recovery USB drives as part of the laptop kit.

par

They're great to have, I have a Windows 10 recovery image on a USB stick that's come in useful more times than I can count, even for personal use.

This happened to my late 2012 27”. Took it to Apple store and was diagnosed as a dead hard drive. It needs to be replaced.
